Robotic Fingertip System Developed for Grasping Delicate Objects

The ASME Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics will publish an abstract in its December 2017 issue detailing a novel fingertip system with a two-layer structure for robotic hands. The research paper, Microgripper-Embedded Fluid Fingertip-Enhancing Positioning and Holding Abilities for Versatile Grasping by Toshihiro Nishimura, Yoshinori Fujihira and Tetsuyou Watanabe, discusses the advancement for robotic hands consisting of a outer “fluid fingertip,” and a rigid link inner mechanism that allows for grasping delicate objects. According to ASME, “…tests showed that the gripper with the developed fingertips can grasp a wide variety of objects, both fragile and heavy.”
